"What are Fact Families?"

Fact families show the relationships between sets of numbers and specific mathematical operations. Fact families are a tool to help children understand the relationship between subtraction and addition, and between multiplication and division.

"9, 4, 13," is an example of an addition fact family, and the expressions that show the relationships are:

9 + 4 = 13
4 + 9 = 13
13 - 4 = 9
13 - 9 = 4

As children get closer to using algebra, they can be given problems like:

4 + ___ = 13

Children who learn about fact families have a much easier time with factoring and with understanding the nature of variables.

3 8 24 would be an example of a multiplication fact family.

3 x 8 = 24
8 x 3 = 24
24/3 = 8
24/8 = 3
